The Human Genetics Unit belongs to the Biological Sciences division. The Unit was formed in 2003 when the Division was restructured. (Formerly, research in Human Genetics was conducted in the Anthropology & Human Genetics Unit.)

The primary focus of the Unit is to conduct research in human genetics, with emphasis on innovative statistical applications and methodological development, leveraging on the availability of a large number of isolated ethnic groups in India.

The Unit also focuses on capacity building in human genetics through networking, organizing Workshops, Symposia and Conferences.
